Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008)

Director: Sacha Gervasi. Cast: Steve 'Lips' Kudlow, Robb Reiner. 90 min. Unrated. Documentary.

1984's This is Spinal Tap was a mockumentary about rockers, which was funny. Unfortunately, Anvil is a documentary. When you're confronted with the story of people who believe in a dream that doesn't exist, and hang on to the dream in the face of all evidence proving it doesn't exist, watching their fight becomes quite depressing. This is not a movie about heavy metal rockers. It's about asking yourself: If you were in their shoes, how far would you be willing to go? You may find yourself shedding a few tears watching these two musicians answer that question.

  1. I really love this documentary and have been a fan of the band since their second album came out(The first one is great too). They inspired a lot of bands who went on to become huge but sadly this was not to be for Anvil.
Would I have stuck at it as long as they did? No.
I really love the last scene in the movie when they are getting ready to go on stage in Japan. The tension was incredible!

  2. Toast,

Obviously I don't have as much knowledge on the subject as you do, because this film was the first time I ever heard such a group existed! Still, without even knowing them, I could sympathize with them, and found their situation heart-breaking.

I'm assuming you should love this year's Best Documentary Oscar winner, "Searching for Sugar Man". It's really bizarre.
